Idaho Equine Hospital welcomes veterinary students for externships lasting 1–4 weeks, with most students electing to participate for two weeks. Preference is given to third- and fourth-year veterinary students. On-site housing is provided.

Externs gain hands-on exposure to a diverse equine caseload while working closely with our staff veterinarians during both regular hours and after-hours emergency coverage. Clinical experience may include:

• Lameness and sports medicine

• Surgery

• Internal medicine workups

• Reproduction

• Dentistry

• Neonatal care

• Emergency/Critical Care

Externs also assist intern veterinarians and technicians with treatments and emergency cases after hours, providing valuable practical experience in a fast-paced hospital setting. This externship offers an excellent opportunity for students to become familiar with the Idaho Equine Hospital Internship Program (please see our AAEP listing or website for additional details).

Idaho Equine Hospital is a full-service referral hospital dedicated to serving horses throughout Idaho and the greater Northwest. Our practice is home to 14 veterinarians who combine cutting-edge diagnostic capabilities with honest, experienced, and compassionate care. Additional hospital resources include a nu...clear scintigraphy suite, pharmacy, in-house laboratory, radiology suite with a dedicated viewing room, and fully equipped isolation stalls for both respiratory and gastrointestinal cases. We also offer specialized facilities for lameness and reproductive evaluations, including a covered arena, a reproduction laboratory with phantom and stocks, and additional housing areas with both indoor and outdoor stalls. Our ambulatory service is supported by fully equipped vehicles, allowing us to deliver hospital-level care directly to the farm. Advanced diagnostic capabilities at Idaho Equine Hospital include on-site MRI, nuclear scintigraphy, digital radiography with overhead and portable X-ray units, abdominal, thoracic, reproductive and musculoskeletal ultrasound, endoscopy, arthroscopy, laparoscopy, and PowerFloat dental equipment. We also maintain a complete in-house clinical pathology laboratory with IDEXX ProCyte and Catalyst analyzers, ensuring rapid and accurate diagnostic results.
