The Department of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, invites applications for a full time faculty position in the Professor of Practice track to join our team at Quality Milk Production Services at our Western Regional Laboratory in Warsaw, New York.

Quality Milk Production Services (QMPS), in the Animal Health Diagnostic Center and New York State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, is a leading diagnostic, service and research unit of the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, serving dairy farmers, the dairy industry, and dairy veterinarians in New York State, the nation, and beyond. The focus of QMPS research, extension service, and teaching is on udder health and related herd health, animal welfare, milk quality, and dairy farm employee management. QMPS operates three regional laboratories in New York State, in addition to its central services on the Cornell campus in Ithaca, maintaining a constant presence on dairy farms across the state and beyond to offer comprehensive evaluation of dairy farm operations regarding optimal and safe production of high-quality milk. Sustained New York State funding and constant revenue generated from fees for diagnostic testing and farm surveys and consults, with an operating budget exceeding $3,000,000 and more than 25 staff and faculty, provides a strong background to launch externally funded cutting edge research projects and programs to further udder health and dairy animal welfare, dairy production, and productivity. New York State is home to ~630,000 dairy cows on >3,000 farms and ranks among the top five milk-producing states in the U.S.

Individuals having DVM and/or PhD degrees, or equivalent, and advanced training, research interests, capacity, and performance in udder health, mastitis management and milk quality are encouraged to apply. Other desirable qualities of the successful candidate include strong interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills, and the ability to work in a diverse collaborative research, clinical, and teaching environment.

The salary range for this position is $100,000 to $140,000 and will be commensurate with academic credentials and experience.

The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine is recognized internationally as a leader in animal medicine, veterinary medical education, public health, and biomedical research.

The responsibilities of the position will include day-to-day leadership of the Warsaw regional QMPS laboratory and its six highly trained team members, human resource development, and financial management. Responsibilities furthermore include maintenance and further development of close contacts with dairy clients, milk inspectors, herd veterinarians and other dairy industry partners, through on farm data collection, consultation, and other activities emphasizing udder health management and diagnostics on dairy farms across western New York. For this position, we are specifically looking for an individual with an interest in evaluation of milking equipment, milking procedures, and robotic milking systems. Candidates should have a strong interest in modern technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence, to optimize on-farm services, improve communications with clients, and enhance employee training. QMPS offers unique opportunities to implement innovations for udder health data mining, assessment, and management, which requires the willingness for personal growth and development.

Western New York is home to progressive dairy veterinary practices. The successful candidate is expected to work closely with veterinarians, keeping them abreast of new research and programs focused on milk quality, as well as diagnostic and management protocols. Establishment of extension, education, and applied independent and collaborative research activities or initiatives in milk quality and udder health are also expected. Excellent opportunities exist for investigative collaborations within the College of Veterinary Medicine and with the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
