The Southern Pines Animal Shelter Board of Directors recognized the need for a systematic approach to reducing the number of unwanted animals in the Pine Belt area. In mid 2008, the Spay & Neuter planning team was formed. This committee was charged with researching proven methods for reducing the number of unwanted animals in other areas of the United States and making recommendations regarding those methods that would be most appropriate for the Pine Belt area. ?
In July of 2009, the clinic opened its doors to the public. Southern Pines Spay & Neuter Clinic offers high-quality, low-cost sterilization surgeries for cats and dogs with help from grants and donors, and basic health services are also available for pet owners in the area. In January of 2021, the clinic changed its name to Southern Pines Healthy Pet Clinic to better encompass the work being done for the community.
