The Department of Clinical Studies – New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a residency position in Equine Field Service. Requirements for the position include a DVM/VMD or equivalent degree and a minimum of one year of post-graduate experience acceptable to the residency committee. Candidates must have graduated from an AVMA accredited school or have obtained an ECFVG certificate and a passing score on the Clinical Proficiency Examination in order to obtain a veterinary license in the states of Maryland, Delaware, and Pennsylvania. The position starts on July 1, 2024.
The objective of the two-year residency in Field Service is to develop knowledge and clinical proficiency in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of equine medicine, field surgery, reproduction, advanced lameness, radiology, ultrasonography, ophthalmology, dentistry, and herd health. This program is in accordance with the requirements of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (AVBP)-Equine Practice.
During the first year, the resident will rotate between Equine Field Service providing clinical service to local equine farms; the Equine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation service; the Large Animal Diagnostic Imaging service, and the section of Large Animal Reproduction and Behavior. Under the guidance of board-certified faculty, the resident will assist or be responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of patients. In the second year, the resident has the opportunity to spend 2.5 months in Equine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, Large Animal Reproduction and Behavior, or other in-house rotations. In both years, the resident will assist in teaching veterinary students and will attend and participate in scheduled rounds. The resident will rotate with Equine Field Service clinicians in the emergency schedule.
Continuation of the residency to the second year is contingent upon satisfactory performance in the first year, as determined by the residency committee. The resident shall be expected to establish and maintain contact with the ABVP and to fulfill the guidelines outlined by the ABVP for residency programs, including, but not limited to, case logs, publication in a refereed journal, and a case report for the ABVP. A certificate of completion of the two-year residency program will be issued upon fulfillment of the program requirements and approval of the residency committee.
New Bolton Center Equine Field Service is equipped with 7 ambulatory vehicles, 4 Digital Radiography machines, 3 ultrasound machines, 1 stationary endoscope, 1 dynamic endoscope, and 4 dental powerfloats. The clinicians in Field Service work closely with those in the New Bolton Center Hospital for Large Animals, which serves as an excellent referral hospital for cases requiring complex care.
Penn Vet New Bolton Center is the large animal campus of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and is located 37 miles southwest of Philadelphia in a picturesque horse country with easy access to cultural and social activities in the Mid-Atlantic region.
