With different areas of interest and specialties, as well as different styles of practice, students are exposed to a rich variety of experiences.

FREE LODGING • Private room in hospital hosts 2 externs in shared space • Kitchen/laundry/bathroom
MENTORSHIP: As externs, students are encouraged to take an active role in the examinations, treatment planning and procedures (as the cases allow). We want you to be involved in every step of the process, to think like a doctor and imagine the patients were your own. We invite you to ask questions, come up with differential diagnoses and make suggestions during down time or one-on-one “truck time.” You will have access to daily schedules and patient files that will allow you look up case history, prepare and plan for the day ahead. We will often ask you to write up the case notes on patients we see together, listen in on conversations with clients or enter invoices together while on the road. In going over these topics together, you learn how we integrate the important aspects of communication, documentation, client management and financial decision-making in the role of DVM.
HOURS: When staying in-hospital, there will often be extra opportunities to assist with after-hours work or emergencies and we understand that you might want to soak up every bit of practical experience we can offer you during this short stay. On the other hand, we know you need to rest and especially when we are very busy, we make every effort to make sure no-one (doctors, staff or students) are feeling overworked or overwhelmed. Neither our externs nor our interns are expected to be on call more than 50% of the time.
Preference is given to 3rd and 4th year veterinary students, but all years are welcome to visit.
Please submit a current resume or CV along with requested dates.
