The Ohio State University Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences invites applications for a full-time clinical-track faculty position in Equine Surgery. Applicants must have a commitment to excellence in clinical service and teaching. Applicants must have a DVM or equivalent degree. Specialty certification or eligibility for certification by the ACVS or ECVS and/or ACVSMR is required.
The successful candidate will join a distinguished equine program that includes 4 ACVS, 3 ACVECC and 4 ACVIM diplomates. Equine surgery, emergency critical care, internal medicine, and ambulatory services (http://vet.osu.edu/vmc/clinical-services-horse-owners) are components of our integrated equine program. Clinical responsibilities will include general and emergency surgery with a soft tissue emphasis, but the service is dedicated to facilitating growth of the successful candidate’s specific interests. Clinical-track candidates will be assigned up to 75% time in clinics, including clinical teaching of students and advanced training of interns and residents. A strong and varied caseload catering to a mix of equine disciplines is coupled with a collaborative environment within the Galbreath Equine Center. Teaching responsibilities will include lectures, labs, and clinical teaching of equine surgery to professional students, interns, residents, and graduate students. Sponsored research is not required for clinical track faculty, yet clinical research, publications, or other scholarly activities to advance clinical veterinary medicine are expected and encouraged. Every faculty member is expected to participate in professional outreach, committee service, and curriculum development.
There is a mentoring program for new faculty members to support their academic development as teachers and investigators. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to integrate into the College’s signature programs, Comparative and Translational Oncology (https://vet.osu.edu/signature-programs/comparative-and- translational-oncology) and Infectious Disease (https://vet.osu.edu/signature-programs/infectious-disease) for collaborative research within the college, Center for Clinical and Translational Science (https://ccts.osu.edu) and Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy, Engineering, and Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Two shared resources provide extensive support for research; the Blue Buffalo Clinical Trials Office/Biospecimen Repository, also known as the Veterinary Clinical Research Support Shared Resource (VCRSSR, supported by the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center and Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences) and the Comparative Pathology and Mouse Phenotyping Shared Resource (CPMPSR). Opportunities also exist for faculty to develop collaborative research with scientists in the Departments of Veterinary Biosciences and Veterinary Preventive Medicine.
The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences supports a faculty of over 75 clinical specialists, educators, and investigators along with extensive training programs for professional students, interns, residents, and graduate students. The Equine Surgery service (https://vet.osu.edu/vmc/equine/our-services) is located within the Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) Columbus (http://vet.osu.edu/vmc) with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, including linear accelerator, electrochemotherapy unit, high-speed treadmill, nuclear scintigraphy, EquinosisÒ Lameness Locator, 128-slice CT, and 3T MRI.
A priority of our equine section is maintaining a team atmosphere, working together both in clinics and in teaching. The service includes 3 Equine Surgery residents as well as rotating interns. We also maintain a collaborative relationship with the service for Farm Animals, which includes 2 ACVS diplomates and 1 surgery resident.
